A transfer can only print as cleanly as the file you send. This DTF artwork setup checklist is built for decorators who need transfers that move from upload to press without avoidable delays, soft edges, missing elements, or costly reprints. Whether you are ordering a few logos or filling gang sheets for a full production run, correct setup protects your turnaround, material cost, and reputation with the customer.
Start With the Actual Print Size
Build artwork at the size it will be printed, not at the size it happens to appear on your screen. A left-chest logo, full-front graphic, sleeve print, and youth design all need different dimensions. If the final print should be 11 inches wide, set the artwork to 11 inches wide before export.
This matters because enlarging a small file after upload does not create detail. It only stretches the pixels already there. A design that looks acceptable as a small thumbnail can become visibly soft when printed at full size.
For raster artwork, target 300 DPI at final print dimensions. For example, an 11-inch-wide design should be roughly 3,300 pixels wide at 300 DPI. Vector files are different because they can scale cleanly, but any embedded raster images inside the file still need enough resolution.
Before you export, confirm the dimensions with the customer-approved mockup or garment spec. A design that prints beautifully at the wrong size is still a production mistake.
Use a Transparent Background Correctly
DTF transfers print white ink beneath colored artwork, so the background of your file matters. If the area around your design is supposed to be garment color, it needs to be truly transparent. A white rectangle, off-white canvas, or hidden background layer can print as an unwanted box.
PNG is a common choice for print-ready DTF artwork because it supports transparency. Export with transparency enabled, then open the finished file against a dark background to check it. This simple step catches white or colored backgrounds that may be hard to see on a white artboard.
Do not confuse a white design element with a white background. White text, highlights, and graphics should remain in the artwork when they are intentional. Delete only the areas that should not print.
Build Clean Edges and Production-Safe Detail
DTF can hold impressive detail, but not every detail is practical on every garment or at every print size. Tiny text, hairline strokes, distressed gaps, and small isolated dots may not reproduce the way they look on screen. Fine elements can soften, fill in, or become difficult to weed from the carrier film after pressing.
Use this rule: if a detail is important to the design, make it large enough to survive real production. Increase very thin lines, open up tight spaces in lettering, and simplify small details that will not be visible from normal viewing distance.
This is especially important with distressed art. A worn texture can look great, but excessive micro-distress may turn into random speckling or reduce legibility. Keep the texture intentional and test it at actual print size. For team names, sponsor logos, and small business marks, clean readability usually matters more than decorative distress.
Check Stroke Widths and Knockouts
Outlined fonts and knockout effects need extra attention. A narrow outline can disappear against the garment, while a tight knockout can close up once the design is transferred. Zooming in helps, but viewing the file at 100% scale is the better test. That shows you what the print is likely to look like at its intended size.
If your graphic includes a thin white gap between colors, consider whether that gap needs to remain open after printing. Slightly widening it is often the safer production choice.
Convert Fonts and Inspect the Final File
Missing fonts are a preventable failure point. If you send editable art and the receiving system does not have your font installed, text can substitute incorrectly or shift its spacing. Convert text to outlines or curves before saving vector artwork. If you are exporting a PNG, inspect the final image after export to make sure every line of type is correct.
Pay close attention to spelling, phone numbers, web addresses, roster names, and dates. Those are the details customers notice first. A final proof check takes minutes. Reprinting a run because a digit was wrong takes time, film, powder, ink, labor, and margin.
For gang sheets, inspect each design individually before you upload. One bad logo can hold up the entire sheet or force a partial reprint after the rest of the order is already pressed.
Keep Colors Intentional
Your monitor, design software, printer, transfer film, and garment all affect perceived color. Bright artwork can shift depending on the file color space, ink system, garment color, and the way the design is viewed under different lighting. That does not mean you should avoid bold color. It means color decisions should be made with production in mind.
Use clean, solid color values for logos and branded artwork whenever possible. If a customer has specific brand colors, request their approved values instead of sampling a screenshot or a compressed social-media image. Screenshots often contain altered colors, blur, and compression artifacts.
RGB artwork is generally preferred for many modern DTF workflows because the print system manages conversion for its inks and profile. However, follow the file requirements for the production workflow you are using. If a customer needs a strict color match, communicate that before ordering and run a sample when the job justifies it.
Gradients can print well, but they need enough room to transition. A very short gradient with many subtle color changes may band or look muddy. Simplify the transition or expand the gradient area if the effect is central to the design.
DTF Artwork Setup Checklist Before Upload
Run this check at final print size before adding artwork to a gang sheet or submitting a transfer order:
- Confirm the print dimensions match the garment placement and customer approval.
- Verify raster files are 300 DPI at final size and are not being enlarged from a low-resolution original.
- Remove unintended backgrounds and confirm transparent areas are actually transparent.
- Check small text, fine lines, distressed elements, and negative spaces for production-safe detail.
- Confirm all fonts are outlined, embedded correctly, or exported accurately in the final image.
- Review spelling, names, numbers, and logo versions against the approved order details.
- Inspect colors, gradients, and white elements for intentional output.
- Open the exported file, not just the working design file, for one final visual check.
Set Up Gang Sheets for Efficient Cutting
Gang sheets help you use film efficiently, but the layout still needs to work at the press. Leave enough space between designs for clean trimming and easy handling. Tight nesting may save a small amount of film, but it can slow cutting and increase the chance of trimming into an adjacent transfer.
Orient designs in a consistent direction when possible. This makes the sheet easier to inspect, cut, and stage for pressing. Group artwork by job, garment type, or order number if the sheet contains several customer designs. A little organization at setup prevents mix-ups at fulfillment.
Avoid placing critical artwork too close to the edge of the printable area. Edge placement can create handling issues and may leave less room for a clean cut. Templates and online gang-sheet builders are useful because they show the real printable boundary, but you still need to review spacing before checkout.
If you run recurring designs, save approved artwork at the correct size with clear file names. A naming system such as Customer_Design_Size_Date is more useful on a busy production day than a folder full of files named final-final-new.png.
Match the File to the Pressing Plan
Artwork setup and pressing are connected. A full-color front print needs a different placement plan than a small left-chest mark. Think through garment color, fabric type, print location, and the transfer size before the order is sent.
For dark garments, confirm that the design has enough contrast. For performance fabrics, bags, or unusual materials, plan for a test press if the job is new to your shop. Specialty finishes, fine detail, and difficult substrates can require different handling than a standard cotton tee.
